Matt Ward, known by his stage name M. Ward, is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who rose to prominence in the Portland, Oregon music scene. In the summer of 2006, Ward relocated to New Hampshire and in the fall of 2007 subsequently returned to Portland.
Although he's been compared to everyone from John Fahey to Tom Waits to Howe Gelb, with 'Hold Time', it's clear that M. Ward, with his brilliant guitar playing and innate sense of melody, is one of those rare and special talents who defy comparison and compartmentalization. His deft guitar picking, bar room piano, and voice like drizzled honey make him a huge favorite of music critics and the focus of public praise from such disparate talents as Norah Jones and Oasis' Noel Gallagher.
雖在樂壇闖蕩近十年，以神似Nick Drake、Tom Waits的樸質吉他鄉懷著稱，並發行過五張質量俱佳的專輯，M. Ward卻大器晚成地在去年才獲得商業成功，與【沒問題先生】女主角Zooey Deschanel共組的She & Him，不但一舉拿下Paste雜誌2008年終榜冠軍，更獲選滾石雜誌2008年度百大單曲，讓M. Ward瞬間爆紅，與Zooey的曖昧關係更是樂迷們的猜測焦點。不料就在M. Ward個人新碟《Hold Time》發行前，Zooey竟與告示牌冠軍獨立樂隊Death Cab For Cutie主唱Ben Gibbard訂婚，遺留下《Hold Time》不少令人玩味的線索… 線索包括：M. Ward與三屆葛萊美獎得主、藍調鄉村搖滾女將Lucinda Williams合唱的〈Oh, Lonesome Me〉，滄桑的嗓音聽得出寂寞低回；專輯同名曲〈Hold Time〉邀請【小太陽的願望】電影配樂樂團DeVotchka主腦Tom Hagerman、丹麥電民謠樂隊Efterklang成員Peter Broderick主理絃樂，譜出惆悵的舊日回憶。不過當然，這些可憐的心情很快就被Zooey Deschanel融化了，她友情客串〈Never Had Nobody Like You〉、〈Rave On〉合聲，輕快甜蜜的對唱，令人忍不住想起She & Him的招牌情歌！此外，新迷幻低傳真樂隊Grandaddy主腦Jason Lytle於〈To Save Me〉助陣吉他與合唱，澎湃熱鬧的鼓點節奏，像極了〈To Go Home〉的暢快；而Bright Eyes／Rilo Kiley金牌製作人Mike Mogis，則在〈Epistemology〉畫龍點睛的曼陀鈴撥奏下，洋溢滿足的愉悅神情。 一路走來，M.
