Mama's Roses
Mama never had a bed of roses
'Cause cotton grew right up to her front door

When the man who owns the land just keeps you poor.
Sometimes we would go to town on Saturday
Flowers grew upon the courthouse square
And mama picked a big bed red rose so tenderly
And gently weaved it through her long black hair

And I saw my mama's hands grow old and wrinkled

Mama passed away in late December,
And we all took some money we had saved
And bought a big bouquet of long stemmed roses,
And placed them at the head of mama's grave.
